Flowers We Love: Cotinus (Smokebush)
20th Jul 2023
We spend a lot of our time fawning over floral specimens, especially at this time of year when a new wave of summer blooms are coming into season (hello Cafe au Lait dahlias!) However, we have equal admiration for the myriad of beautiful foliages that play a crucial role by offering texture, contrast, and height to arrangements. There’s a flowering shrub that falls somewhere between these two worlds that holds a particularly special place floristry - cotinus, otherwise known as smokebush.
Even before its summer explosion, the richly coloured leaves are hugely coveted, contrasting beautifully with neutral shades. But it’s around about now (mid to late July) with its unique burst of cotton candy flowers that it really takes to the spotlight. The tones range from sage green with touches of ballerina pink to the duskiest hue, truly living up to its name.
This week our Contracts team have embraced cotinus as part of their displays for the chic surrounds of Nobu Portman Square - pairing with equally striking contemporary stems. Meanwhile, In-store, the beautiful foliage has been gathered into gorgeous seasonal offerings. Cotinus in all its flowering glory is a fairly fleeting moment, so embrace it while the candy floss season lasts!
